Packheiser vs Williams Dec. 14 - This Time For Sure (?)
28.11.03 - “Promoter Jess Harding last evening confirmed that all lights are ‘Go’ and that the fight between Ralf Packheiser and Danny Williams can finally go ahead on December 13,” said a delighted manager Olaf Schröder, whose company Fight Production recently signed the Berlin heavyweight. There were bad words exchanged after British and Commonwealth champion Williams back out at the last hour – literally – when their non-title contest was first scheduled to take place at London’s York Hall on October 24. While the Londoner claimed he was ill and unable to box only a few hours before fight time, former world junior bronze medallist Packheiser didn’t buy it, especially since Williams’ assurances that he had seen a doctor were never proven by any medical statements. “What a bum that guy is! Had he really been ill, he would have known earlier,” Packheiser, 12-3 (6) said after he left his York Hall dressing room before even having packed his bag out.
Now on it is again, this time – hopefully – for sure and it seems that the postponement has turned out in Packheiser’s favour, because now their clash will take place in the huge German’s country, namely in Nuremburg as a supporting act to the Sven Ottke vs Robin Reid IBF/WBA supermiddleweight title fight.
‘Packe’, as the 33-year-old (by fight time) is called by his friends, has stayed in the gym, preparing with trainer Detlef Kumm in Berlin. “Beating Danny Williams will open all doors to me. I know I’m still considered the underdog, but as ready to give it a shot as I can be. Now I just hope Williams leaves excuses behind and face me like a man,” he said.
