Martinez defeats Pavlik, captures WBC/WBO middleweight titles
By Harold Kupel: Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 23 KOs) defeated WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The final judges’ scores were 115-111, 116-111, 115-112. Martinez was too fast for Pavlik in the early part of the fight, landing well with left hands to the head of Pavlik in rounds 1-4.

Pavlik came on in the 5th and started having better success with his power shots. He still looked slow compared to the much quicker Martinez. Pavlik looked confused in the last rounds of the fight, as Martinez got his second wind and dominated rounds eight though twelve with his speed. Pavlik suffered a bad cut over his right eye in the 9th. The cut seemed to really bother Pavlik almost as much as Martinez’s better hand speed and movement. In the end, Pavlik was simply too slow and too limited with his ability to move around the ring and he ended up getting dominated by the faster Martinez.
