Marquez TKOs Vazquez in 3rd round

boxingBy Harold Kupell: Israel Vazquez (44-5, 32 KO's) looked totally shot tonight in getting torn apart by Rafael Marquez (39-5, 35 KO's) and stopped in the 3rd round of a one-sided fight at the Staples Center. Vazquez, moving slow from the outset, was badly cut over his left eye in the opening round from hard right hands from Marquez. With blood dripping in his eyes, Vazquez had a hard time picking up the fast shots from Marquez and found himself eating a lot of leather. In the 3rd round, Vazquez was cut over his right eye from a clash of heads. Now fighting with blood dripping into both eyes, Vazquez was nearly defenseless as Marquez teed off and sought to put an end to the fight. Thankfully, referee Raul Caiz Jr. stepped in and halted the slaughter at 1:33 of the round before Vazquez could get badly hurt.

Vazquez never stood much of a chance in this fight, as he was eating hard shots in both the 1st and 2nd rounds, losing both of them. In the 3rd, Vazquez's face was covered with blood and he was almost entirely ineffective against the more able-bodied Marquez. Although Marquez was technically the older fighter at 35 compared to the 32-year-old Vazquez, he sure looked a lot younger tonight.Hopefully, Vazquez hangs up his gloves for good..
