Rodriguez, Maldonado score first round KOs
DENVER, CO (June 27, 2010) Saturday night in Denver, Colorado, Robert Rodriguez and Fidel Maldonado, two of boxing’s brightest young prospects, thrilled local fight fans with spectacular first round knockouts.
Fighting out of nearby Greeley, Colorado, 19 year old super bantamweight Rodriguez improved to 4-0-0, dropping pro debuting Michael Montalbano three times in the initial stanza on his way to earn his first stoppage..
After a sensational amateur career, this was Rodriguez’s first professional bout in his home state of Colorado and the crowd at Red & Jerry’s were on their feet throughout the first round cheering on the hometown hero.
Also fighting under the TKO Boxing Promotions banner, 18 year old Fidel Maldonado stayed perfect, stunning the crowd with a brutal first round knockout of undefeated Denver prospect Jacob Dominguez, the end coming at the 1:29 mark of the round.
With the win, Albuquerque’s Maldonado improved to 3-0-0, all by first round knockout, while Dominguez moved to 2-1-0 (1KO).
