Michael Sprott Wins Prizefighter: Heavyweights IV

By James Slater: Tonight in London, 35-year-old Michael Sprott won the latest edition of the Barry Hearn-promoted “Prize Fighter” tournament. Capturing the trophy and the £32,000 prize money, Sprott may have rejuvenated his pro career.

Sprott, who was sensationally KO’d by former KO victim Audley Harrison in this year’s April rematch, now hopes to unlock the kind of goldmine “A-Force” found by winning “Prizefighter” last year - the win ultimately leading to Harrison’s Nov.13th WBA title clash with David Haye.

Tonight, Sprott won the title with wins over: Danny Hughes, in Sprott’s first fight - winning the three-rounder by unanimous decision. Then the 35-year-old won his second UD of the night by beating the tough and game Shane McPhilbin. And finally, in the tourney climax, Sprott had a little too much energy for Matt Skelton (who has two previous wins over Sprott) - winning a hard-fought split decision.

Sprott said post-fight that the last fight was hard, but that he now looks ahead to some big fights.

Skelton, who looked hard done by, by the final decision, may well be back for another instalment of the popular series!

Tonight’s results in full:

Fight one: Matt Skelton WU3 Ali Adams

Fight two: Kevin McBride (who weighed-in at a whopping 287-pounds!) WS3 Franklin Egobi

Fight three: Shane McPhilbin TKO 2 Declan Timlin

Fight four: Michael Sprott WU3 Danny Hughes

Fight five: Matt Skelton WU3 Kevin McBride (although a right hand knockdown for McBride was un-scored in the 2nd-round)

Fight six: Michael Sprott WU3 Shane McPhilbin

THE FINAL:
