Cuban Sensation, World Champ Yuriorkis Gamboa Reportedly Arrested In Miami
By James Slater: According to a breaking news report that has appeared on NBCMiami.com, another reigning world champion is in trouble with the law. Reportedly, WBA featherweight king and all-round sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa was arrested earlier today by police in Miami. Not much has been made public about Gamoa’s arrest but it has been reported that he has been charged with domestic violence. So far, we do not know who he has used any violence against.
Miami-Dade police took the unbeaten star in this morning but have not released any other details. Gamboa lives and trains in Miami, and he has a wife and a daughter. No doubt more details will be forthcoming in due course.
It will be a real shame if Gamboa is guilty of domestic violence; for a number of reasons. From purely a boxing perspective, any long-term prison time would seriously affect his ultra-promising career, while from a PR standpoint, any accusations of this kind will do his image no favours at all.
29-year-old Gamboa, 20-0(16) last fought in March, when he looked great in stopping Jorge Solis inside four-rounds. With a number of big fights on the horizon - including further title fights and a clash with the now-beaten Juan Manuel Lopez - the last thing Gamboa needs is this trouble with the law he has found himself in.
Hopefully, all issues will be resolved soon and Gamboa will get back on track with his electrifying career. Seen by many as a future great of the sport, the 2004 Olympic gold medallist and all-round amateur standout has done everything right. Until now.
Before Gamboa has had the chance to plead his innocence, though, we should cast no judgements on him.
