Oscar Makes It Official, Barrera Coming To El Paso
18.02.05 - It was 1998 in El Paso, Texas at the famed Sun Bowl where Oscar De La Hoya sent notice to the world that he was on his way to becoming boxing's biggest attraction. Some 45,000 fans jammed into the football stadium to watch the Golden Boy take apart Frenchman Patrick Charpentier in four rounds.. Now, almost six years later, De La Hoya the promoter returns to bring the biggest boxing event in the Sun City in the 21st century. And with him comes Mexico's biggest star and one of boxing's biggest attractions, three-time world champion Marco Antonio Barrera.

According to De La Hoya, owner of Golden Boy Promotions, the stage is set for El Paso. "El Paso has my word, it's official that Marco Antonio Barrera (59-4, Mexico City) will be defending his WBC World Super Featherweight title against Mzonke Fana, (22-2, #1 World Ranked contender, S. Africa) at the Don Haskins Center on April 9th."
De La Hoya also noted that "Choko" Hernandez will be defending his WBO World Jr. Bantamweight title against Fernando Montiel. In addition, #1 World Lightweight Contender, Juan Lazcano of El Paso will be fighting on the card along with two Olympians signed by De La Hoya -- Vicente Escobedo and Abner Mares.
The event will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View, but blacked-out in the El Paso/Juarez area.
