Anthony Thompson Back In Action Tuesday
08.12 - Heavyweight Anthony “Tony the Tiger” Thompson of Silver Spring, Md., who’s promoted by Cedric Kushner Promotions, goes for his 16th straight win when he faces Onebo Mazime Ghahou of Atlanta Tuesday (Oct. 9) in Pikesville, Md. Thompson, a quick and slick 6-foot-6-inch southpaw, has a record of 19-1 with 11 knockouts and has stopped six of his past eight opponents.
The 32-year-old Thompson has halted his past three foes: Gilbert Martinez in the sixth round Aug. 22 on a Cedric Kushner Promotions “Everlast Heavyweight Explosion” card in Reno, Nev.; James Gaines in the eighth March 7 in Niagara Falls, Ont.; and Zuri Lawrence in the seventh on another Cedric Kushner Promotions “Everlast Heavyweight Explosion” show Oct. 20, 2002, in Tacoma, Wash.
Thompson has always been a crafty counterpuncher; but with his rapidly developing power, he’s emerging as a complete package.
“I’m going to keep getting better,” said Thompson. “I want people to think about me when they talk about the top 10 heavyweights in the world. My time is coming, and I believe 2004 is going to be my year.”
Thompson is trained by respected veteran Tom Browner. The 28-year-old Ghahou, also a southpaw, has a record of 15-19 with 11 knockouts.
