Rahman-Klitschko set for April 30th

09.03.05 - By Jeff Bastasini: Well, it now appears that former heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (40-5-1, 33 KO’s) will meet with WBC Heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko on April 30th at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Promoter Don King told ESPN yesterday “Monte (Barrett) was in but, Rahman has now agreed to the fight. I think he talked to HBO and found out that I wasn’t hiding any money.” Previous to agreeing to the fight, Monte Barrett, who is # 3 in the WBC, was stepping in to replace Rahman as an opponent for Klitschko.

Rahman had filed a request last week that the WBC order a purse bid in which other promoters could propose a dollar amount to be divided between the two fighters. However, Rahman found out from WBC president Jose Sulaiman that Klitschko not only had until June 1 to begin negotiations, but that he could make an optional defense, which means that Klitschko (35-2, 34 KO’s) wouldn’t have to face Rahman until September. Rahman had been unhappy with the 2 million purse offered to him for the fight but was seeking 4 million. Klitschko will be getting 5 million for the fight.
