Margarito met with a NYSAC appointed Dr. Michael Goldstein, who after examining Margarito’s right eye, determined that he was okay to fight Cotto. The New Athletic Commission then opted to give Margarito his license.
Earlier today, the fight was hanging by a thread after Cotto said he wouldn’t fight Margarito anywhere else but New York. Given all the marketing that his promoter Bob Arum has done for this fight, as well as the HBO 24/7 series that was put together for the fight, it could have big blow to Arum had the commission not ruled in Margarito’s favor. In hindsight, Arum might have been better off waiting a little longer before putting this fight together.
After all, Margarito is coming off of a brutal beating against Manny Pacquiao and two surgeries. Arum should have waited until Margarito had at least had a minimum of one tune-up bout to ensure that his surgically repaired right eye was fit for a tough fight against Cotto. However, Margarito wanted the fight and Arum went along with it. Thankfully Margarito can now fight. The only question now is whether Margarito’s right eye will hold up under the pounding from Cotto. It seems like a really bad idea to go into a hard fight like this after surgeries.
