Groves out of December 9th defence, DeGale Now On The Featured Main Bout
By Martin Salt: George Groves has been forced to pull out of his British and Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Title defence on 9th December 2011 with a hand injury. Groves was due to be joint-headlining a fight card with rival Super-Middleweight James DeGale at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. James DeGale’s WBO Intercontinental title defence against Jose Maria Guerrero will now be the main feature bout of the evening.

According to BBC Sport another fight, possibly a title defence, will be announced shortly as the main supporting bout. Also still on the Frank Warren promoted card will be middleweight Billy Joe Saunders and light-heavyweight prospect Callum Johnson.
Groves will now return to the ring early next year. This year has been a solid one for Groves with his points victory over James DeGale being the main highlight. Although Groves is progressing well in his career the Hammersmith fighter is well grounded and is happy to work his way up slowly towards a world title opportunity.
In the meantime James DeGale will be responsible for providing the main entertainment on 9th December 2011. This year maybe one to forget for ‘Chunky’ with his defeat against bitter rival Groves still fresh in the memory. DeGale has always maintained the points decision was disputable and wants a rematch with Groves as soon as possible. However his recent hard fought victory against Piotr Wilczewski to win the European Super-Middleweight title was hardly spectacular and DeGale looked troubled on several occasions. Look for DeGale to produce a flash and composed performance to end his year on a high note.
