Pacquiao and Arum missed their chance to get Cotto by not agreeing to the 150 pound catchweight
By Michael Collins: Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum completely blew it by not agreeing to the tiny three pound catchweight that Miguel Cotto was asking from Pacquiao and Arum for him to fight the Filipino star again. Cotto fights at 154lbs and he wanted Pacquiao to agree to fight him at 150lbs so that he wouldnít have to strip off too much weight and end up too weak to fight.
But Pacquiao wasnít willing to meet Cotto at the halfway point and wanted him to come all the way down to 147 without even a tiny catchweight. By being resistant to the give Cotto a slight help with the weight, it doomed the fight and left Cotto with no other choice but to agree to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Itís sad really because if you canít give your opponent just a little break, it sets up situations like this where your opponent walks. Obviously this is a rare thing because most fighters would do anything asked of them just to get the fight but not this time. By refusing to give Cotto something he wanted, Pacquiao will have to settle for a fight against Timothy Bradley and thatís a fight that will likely bring in significantly less money.
However, there is a benefit. Pacquiao will likely able to get whatever terms he asks for because Bradley probably wonít want to say no to anything for fear of losing the fight. Unlike Cotto, Bradley hasnít made a huge amount of money yet. Once he does, I suppose heíll find it easy to say no to other fighters when they dictate the terms. However, it wonít be with Pacquiao because heíll likely be long retired by the time Bradley becomes a wealthy enough to say no.
