Samuel Peter: Taking a Big Step Backwards
30.03.05 - By Umar ben-Ivan Lee: The boxing public has been looking for a savior in the heavyweight division for quite some time. Prospects have came and went and have been exposed and the division is still steeped in mediocrity. Many in boxing in recent months have began to place their hopes in a young Nigerian named Samuel Peter and the team of Peter, led by promoter Dino Duva, has managed to get many in the boxing world, including the television networks, to buy into the promise of Peter..

After fighting on HBO and Showtime in his last two fights, against reasonably well-known opponents, Sam Peter will now face the aged and washed-up, of he ever had any talent, Gilbert Martinez April 29 on ESPN. This comes as a surprise to many because most prospects seek to fight better and better opponents each time; for an example prospect Calvin Brock is taking a dramatic leap forward in facing Jameel McCline on April 23. Peter is taking a step backwards. This seems even more odd after Peter was publicly challenged by fellow prospect Taurus Sykes of Brooklyn.
If Peter is to be taken serious by the boxing public he will need to start fighting better opponents such as Sykes, Brock, Audley Harrison and others or he will juts be in the category of someone like Faruq Saleem who is a fringe-contender because his management has never moved him along properly.
