Chris John Cut in Training!
05.04.05 - By Harry Summers Jr.: It is now confirmed, Indonesian Chris John, 34-0-1 (19), the current WBA Featherweight champion, suffered a bad cut over his right eye during an intense sparring session with world-ranked junior welterweight and stablemate Naoufel Ben Rabah on March 27.. The cut will undoubtedly hinder the quality of John's preparation leading into his April 22 title defense in Jakarta against smooth southpaw and ex-champ Derrick "Smoke" Gainer.

25-year-old John had been looking sharp in recent sparring sessions with (among others) WBO #3 junior middleweight Daniel "The Rock" Dawson (boxing out of a lefty stance), Filipino Dexter Delada, 2004 Australian Olympian Ryan Langham, Indonesian 140lb champ Tia Koswara, and the aforementioned Rabah.
Training in the remote Belok Village, Bali Island, the Indonesian sensation in fact dropped two fighters in consecutive sparring sessions, one of which was filmed and subsequently aired by an Indonesian television station.
Sparring is out of the question for the final 2 ½ weeks of John's preparation. His team is confident the cut will be okay by bell time, but it's imperative that it doesn't take another knock. Thus, John's trainer Craig Christian will substitute the absence of sparring with extra pad work and shadow boxing.
Team John is still positive their charge will be too powerful for the quick-handed Gainer, who will have Buddy McGirt working the corner.
* Meanwhile, John's stablemate Daniel "The Rock" Dawson is also in preparation for a bout with current Indonesian 154lb champ David Koswara on the John-Gainer undercard. Dawson, the current WBO Asia Pacific champ at 154lb and Australian middleweight champion, boasts an undefeated mark of 19-0 (14). He is also a legitimate former two-time world kickboxing champion. Word has it Dawson has been solid as a "Rock" in training.
