Riddick Bowe decisions Billy Zumbrun
08.04.05 - Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe earned a split decision victory over Billy Zumbrun on Thursday night. Judge Ray Corona had Zumbrun winning 95-93, David Denkin and Lou Filippo favored Bowe by scores of 96-92. The 37-year-old Bowe weighed 280 pounds, by far the most of his career.. Bowe improved his record to 42-1, with 33 knockouts.
On the undercard, Vassiliy Jirov of Kazakhstan earned a third-round knockout of Forrest Neal in their 10-round heavyweight bout. Jirov, a 1996 Olympic champion who now lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., improved his record to 34-3, with 30 knockouts. Neal is now 16-6, with 12 knockouts.
2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward was declared a winner in his six-round bout with Anthony Pietrantonio when the referee disqualified Pietrantonio in the third round for repeatedly throwing punches after a break. Ward improved to 3-0 since turning pro.
