Barrera blasts out Fana in 2nd round knockout!

10.04.05 - By Jeff Bastasini: Marco Antonio Barrera annihilated an overmatched Mzonke Fana in the 2nd round, to defend his WBC Super Featherweight title on Saturday night. It took all of 5 minutes for the three time world champion, Barrera, to completely devastate his South African contender Mzonke Fana (22-3, 8 KO's), who never was able to slow Barrera down for an instant..

From the opening of the first round, Barrera was all over Fana, starching him with a volley of right hands that had him badly hurt. in the meantime, there was very little return fire from Fana, who relied on an ineffective jab to try and fend off Barrera’s fierce attacks.

In the 2nd round, Barrera (60-4, 42 KO’s) tagged Fana with a couple of huge punches to the body and then finished him off with an over hand right that dropped Fana to the canvas. The referee quickly stepped in to stop the fight at 1:48 of the second round.

This was the first fight for Barrera since winning the WBC Super Featherweight title against Erik Morales on November 27, 2004.

After the fight, Barrera wasn’t clear on who he wants to fight next as he said "It was a great victory against the top-ranked challenger. Now I'll take a break, and see what my promotor, Oscar de la Hoya, decides."

Barrera was again asked if he was interested in fighting Erk Morales and he said "If that's what the fans want, I'm here."

Now that this slaughter is over, Barrera can possibly move up to the light weight division (135 pounds) and try for a 4th title or he can stay at Super Featherweight and go for a rematch against Manny Pacquiao to avenge his previous loss to the star from the Philipines. Even though Pacquiao is now slightly tarnished after getting dominated by Morales, the fight would still bring in a lot of money for Morales.
