Berto fails drugs test!!

By James Slater - Reports are surfacing (I read the story on ESPN.com) that say former WBC welterweight champ Andre Berto has failed a random drug test ahead of his planned June 23rd rematch with Victor Ortiz. According to ESPN.com, Berto tested positive for the steroid norandrosterone.

Promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com that “I know he tested positive. I learned it in the last half-hour. I have nothing else to say..
Reportedly, the Showtime T.V network, which would have shown the fight, a rematch of 2011’s FOTY, is now acting as though the fight will NOT happen.

More details are sure to develop, but already this news is yet another black eye for boxing at a time when the sport could have done without it. Lamont Peterson is currently arguing his case with regards to testing positive for an unacceptably high level of testosterone, which ruined his planned rematch with Amir Khan (which would have gone down in Vegas tomorrow night), and now Berto’s second fight with Ortiz, along with his very career and good name, is also very much in the balance.

Berto has yet to comment. ESPN.com reports how Showtime and Golden Boy are already looking at the possibility of a replacement opponent for Ortiz.
