Q-I was at your last fight at Robert Treat on April 14 in a scheduled six rounds against Steven Johnson. In the first round you had him down at about the round’s midway point. In the second Johnson went into more of a survival mode holding when possible hitting with light punches that either missed or didn’t affect you at all. In the third you began exhibiting your ring generalship and ended it with bout’s final knockdown and stoppage at 1:24 of the third. Do you have any comments about your performance that night?
A-I really don’t have much comment. I’m my worst critic. I was expecting something better. Maybe in my next fight I will be the better and meet my expectations of my self. I won’t say I wasn’t impressed-but I was not truly impressed by myself. I mean I had a victory and I’m glad for that.
Q-Any thoughts on your upcoming fight though the opponent hasn’t been determined yet per BoxingRec.com. How do you feel about not knowing anything about your opponent?
A-Actually, it’s kind of good for me. Right now I’m training for June 13th. So my next opponent that they find if he is not in shape. Then he has to get in shape and there is not lot of time so I don’t think that is too good for him.
Q-How long will you stay at bantamweight?
A-I want to stay at bantamweight until I get a title until I get recognition in this weight class. I want to be able to say that I conquered everything that has to be conquered in this weight class before I move to a higher weight class. Then I can prove a point that I’m not only good in one weight class as I move up.
Q- I have just done an article about your father Abdur Rahim Muhammad. I have to say he is a swell guy. You are truly blessed to have a father like him that cares about you so much. Talk to me about your feelings about and your relationship with him as a father and trainer?
A- As a Father I am happy to have him for my father because I know he will have my back through thick and thin. He’s the one person that I can count on if I make a dumb decision with my heart he’ll be the one to use his head and talk to me about what I’m about to get into. As a trainer he is also good because he has always been by my side since I was little. He has always been a partner to me. Nothing really is bad. The only conflicts that we have is not that I have a big ego but I have a big heart and I like to move fast and he tells me to move slow you don’t have to fight this kind of fight right now. You can fight this fight later for more marbles and then it makes more sense. He is also my manager and he is managing my career and moving me real good. He makes sure that I have my head on straight and I love him for that. I’m glad I have him for a father, manager, and trainer. Every father and son are going to have their ups and downs but you realize that he’s your father that’s your blood. You can never really disrespect him you can only take a situation to a certain level. I see other fathers and sons in boxing having conflicts. Then the day will come that they wish they could bring their father back and wish they could act a different way. That is why I am trying as hard as I can to stick around with my father going through all the bumps together and everything will be great.
