Erik Morales could face Maidana or Soto vs. Matthysse winner next
By Marcus Richardson: 35-year-old Erik Morales (52-8, 36 KOís) reportedly could be facing Marcos Maidana in a rematch in July or taking on the winner of the June 23rd fight between Lucas Matthysse and Humberto Soto, according to Examiner.com Morales was hoping to get a fight against Juan Manuel Marquez for July 14th, but the fight didnít happen for various reasons. Now Morales has a couple of appealing options open to him.

Morales was beaten by Maidana in a close fight in April of last year, and it came down to the wire with Maidana outworking him in the last three rounds. That might be the best option for Morales, because Maidana currently holds down the World Boxing Association light welterweight title and Morales matches up better with him than he would against a very busy Soto or a boxer/puncher like Matthsse. Maidanaís fights are televised on HBO and he already has a huge following. If Morales wants to try and capture another title, Maidana is definitely the way to go. Itís also a fight that can happen a lot sooner than waiting until later on in the year for Soto or Matthysse to get ready for him.
Morales was beaten in his last fight against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia in March, and he didnít look good. Morales looked kind of flabby and failed to make weight. He lost his WBC title on the scales after he didnít attempt a second try. He fought well enough to give Garcia a lot of problems, but he wasnít able to fight consistently hard enough to get the win. An in shape Morales would have given Garcia a lot of problems, but I still have doubts whether Morales would have been able to work hard enough to get the win.
