Lopez defeats Ortiz after he quits; Matthysse stops Soto in 5th!
By Michael Collins: I bet Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO's) is feeling pretty low right now after quitting after the 9th round in his fight against Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18 KO's) at the Staples Center, in Los Angles, California. Ortiz quit after the 9th round due to an injured jaw. Ortiz was getting punished in rounds seven through nine, and by quitting after the 9th, Ortiz may have saved himself from getting taken out by the surging Lopez. The judges had Ortiz ahead at the time of the stoppage by the scores of 86-85, 87-84 and 88-83. I had Lopez ahead by the score 88-83 at the time Ortiz quit.

Ortiz had problems from the get go with Lopez's attacking style of fighting, as he was hit over and over again by hard right hands from the attacking Lopez. Ortiz did a little fouling in the fight, landing some beautiful rabbit punches that he probably should have been penalized for but he wasn't.
The loss ruins a big fight that Golden Boy Promotions had planned between Ortiz and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez on September 15th. Golden Boy can't possibly still put Ortiz in with Alvarez after this poor performance from Ortiz. You never know, though. Golden Boy could still put Ortiz in with Alvarez, but the fight wouldn't draw flies after tonight. I don't know that a fight between Lopez and Alvarez will be worthy of a PPV bout to be honest. That seems more like a regular HBO bout to me or maybe ESPN at best.
Other fights on the card:
Lucas Matthysse TKO 5 Humberto Soto
Jermell Charlo KO 5 Denis Douglin
Omar Figueroa TKO 1 Alain Hernandez
Randy Caballero TKO 5 Jamal Parram
