Change For David Barnes

19.04.05 - British Welterweight Champion David Barnes will now face Ali Nuumbembe at the Barnsley Metrodome this Friday (22 April). It was announced last week that Manchester hitter Barnes would challenge Commonwealth champion Joseph Okine but the Ghanaian encountered Visa difficulties and was unable to travel.. Barnes will have an equally hard if not harder task against the Manchester based Namibian Nuumbembe for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Welterweight title.

Nuumbembe captured bronze at the 2002 Commonwealth Games for his country and as professional has lost only once in 12 fights.

"It is still my dream to add the Commonwealth belt to my British and it's only a matter of time until I get it," said Barnes.

"I'm not disappointed, I'm just happy to be getting back into the ring and challenging for another title and when I do get the chance to fight for the Commonwealth the victory will be all the more sweet."

"Nuumembe is a tough kid and he will be really up for the fight to cause an upset by beating me. I think he will be dangerous for four or five rounds and then the fight is mine."
