Danny Garcia V Eric Morales Rematch Set: But Why?
By Sevak Sarkisian: As most fight fans already know, the newly crowned WBC/WBA JR welterweight champion Danny Garcia will be fighting a re-match against Eric Morales in the new Barclays center in Brooklyn this upcoming October. Eric Morales is no doubt a future Hall-of-Famer however; he is way past his best. Though still a world class fighter, he lost convincingly the first time around against Garcia this past March.
To Eric’s credit he did start the fight off well, but as soon as Garcia started to increase his punch output Eric started to fall behind the scorecards. The winner of the fight was clearly the young Garcia and in this case the judges’ scorecards did not spark up any sort of controversy. The fight itself was not a bad one, but it certainly wasn’t a barn burner or a fight of the year candidate type of fight. For these exact reasons, Eric Morales was probably the last fighter that fans thought the young Garcia would face next after completely destroying Amir Khan in a huge upset.
Perhaps the fact that Danny Garcia’s last fight being an upset, has something to do with why Morales is his next opponent. Golden boy Promotions probably doesn’t want to put Garcia in a risky fight right away after his upset victory over Khan. But whatever the case is, fight fans should not tolerate and support match ups like this one. Since it looks like the fight has already been signed, I’m assuming a major network such as HBO or Showtime has already approved of the match up and agreed to pick up the fight and air it. To be quite frank, I’m getting a little tired of the big networks willing to accept match-ups like this from promoters. The standard has to get hire in order for the sport of boxing to maintain its fan base.
Fortunately, some great match ups are scheduled to take place later this year such as Martinez v Chavez, fans in my humble opinion just need more of that.
