22.04.05 - By Harry Summers Jnr.: Chris John successfully defended his WBA World featherweight title tonight against American, Derrick “Smoke” Gainer by way of unanimous decision at the Britama Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia. Chris John was down early in the first stanza and received a standing 8 count. He proceeded to dominate the rest of the round and boxing to plan.. He was clearly the more skilled boxer in a one sided championship bout to the delight of thousands of fever pitched Indonesian fans chanting his name through the duration of the fight.

“Chris John was just great tonight” said trainer Craig Christian, “We had a plan and he stuck to it all the way. I was proud of him, he really carried a lot of pressure into this fight with him. He was fighting for him name and the whole of Indonesia but I tell you what, he did it in style. He is a great man and will be a great champion. He nearly had Derrick out in the last round but to his credit he stuck in there, he is a good boxer and has a good team behind him but nothing could stop Chris tonight”.
Judges Derek Milham, Silvestre Abainza and Mikael Hook respectively scored the bout, 118-111, 118-118, 118-109.
On the undercard Daniel “The Rock” Dawson won in the 10 round against David Koswara. Dawson struggled with sickness but was still far superior for the Indonesian champ.
