Howard Eastman to fight Sendra - Targets Bernard Hopkins

09.01.04 - Battersea’s Howard Eastman will make the third defence of his second reign as European champion on Friday January 30th at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre against the heavy hitting Spanish champion Jorge Sendra in what he hopes will be a final fight before a showdown against undisputed middleweight king Bernard Hopkins.

“We are working to secure Howard his entitlement as the WBC’s number one contender to Bernard Hopkins,” said his promoter Mick Hennessy. “I am in regular contact with their President Jose Sulaiman and seeking assurances that the appropriate action will be taken. Hopkins has not made a mandatory defence for nine months now and although the situation is not entirely clear concerning his obligations to the other titles, Howard’s time is drawing near.

“None of this is to say that we are taking Howard’s contest with Sendra lightly, he is a very credible challenger having stopped 20 of his 25 opponents and holds the national title. Howard, however, is arguably the best middleweight in the world and we have to plan ahead to get him the fight that he deserves: Bernard Hopkins.”
