John Ruiz skipping Oquendo for Jones rematch
10.01.04 - WBA Interim heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz will hold off on his rumored showdown against fellow Puerto Rican “Fast” Fres Oquendo to fight a rematch against WBA heavyweight title-holder Roy Jones, Jr. Ruiz captured a unanimous 12-round decision December 13 from Hasim “The Rock” Rahman for the WBA Interim heavyweight crown. The WBA had mandated that Jones fight the Ruiz-Rahman winner within 120 days for his world title. According to WBA rules, Jones has until February 13th – 60 days prior to his 120-day deadline to fight Ruiz – to go into negotiations for a rematch against Ruiz or a purse bid will go into effect. “John did his part by beating Rahman for the WBA Interim title,” Ruiz’ manager/head trainer Norman “Stoney” Stone said. “Rahman said his right hand would hurt more than John’s divorce; Rahman never even hit John with a right. Now it’s time for Jones to step up to the plate. Why is it that we’re always chasing him? Johnny has informed the WBA that he is ready, willing and able to fight Jones. We’re willing to let it go to purse bid right now.

“Brad Jacobs (Jones’ manager) told John’s attorney, Anthony Cardinale, that Jones won’t give up his belt and is willing to fight John. Well, then, let’s make it happen. Skip the BS. We don’t want to hear any excuses about meeting minimums. That has nothing to do with John Ruiz. We’re been with Don King and he’s our promoter. We threw out our minimums to fight Jones. We gave him everything to make the first fight. Now it’s his turn to return the favor.”
Team Ruiz noted that Jones received a special permit to fight for the light heavyweight championship against (Antonio Tarver) with the condition that he’d fight the Ruiz-Rahman winner within 120 days.
