Jermain Taylor Steps In For Bernard Hopkins
11.08.05 - The new undisputed middleweight champion of the world, Jermain Taylor, has stepped in to assist the American Cancer Society following a snub of the charity by former champ Bernard Hopkins. Hopkins recently asked that The Ring withhold recognition of Taylor as middleweight champion and continue to recognize Hopkins..
When The Ring refused the request, Hopkins refused to keep an earlier promise to a Ring Magazine staff member to sign a pair of gloves for an American Cancer Society fundraiser. In the presence of more than one person, Hopkins stated, "#%&* the American Cancer Society. Get Jermain Taylor to sign them."
No problem!
When Taylor, the favorite son of Little Rock, Arkansas, learned of the situation, he readily agreed to donate an autographed glove and trunks to aid the charity.
"I will do everything I can to help the American Cancer Society," said Taylor. "It's a great cause and a great charity."
