Joe Mesi Calls Out Lennox Lewis At News Conference

14.01.04 - Undefeated heavyweight boxing contender “Baby Joe” Mesi, (28-0, 25 KO’s), used a news conference today to issue a challenge at WBC heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis. “This is the first time I am publicly saying this. I want to fight Lennox Lewis in 2004. I’m knocking at his door.” Mesi, 30, confirmed that he seems to be heading toward a summer outdoor slugfest fight in Upstate New York with former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson. Mesi is currently ranked as the number 4 contender to Lewis behind Vitali Klitshko, Corrie Sanders and David Tua. Tyson is ranked number 5.

However, he let it be known that beating Lewis and taking his title is top priority.

Lewis is not just the WBC champ; he is the linear champion. In other words, he is the man that beat the man that beat the man…”

“Knowing that fuels me even more,” Mesi said.

“I want to be the person who takes the title away from him,” Mesi said. “I don’t want him to retire. I don’t want him to hand it (the title) to Vitali Klitschko. I don’t even want him to fight Klitschko.”

“I believe I can beat Lennox Lewis and I feel I’m the better man right now.”

“There’s a new crop of good heavyweights arriving on the scene,” Mesi said. “I just happen to be leading the crew.”
