08.11.05 - By Jim Amato: I like Ray Mancini who was recently inducted in to the World Boxing Hall Of Fame. It's always nice to see an Ohio kid make good so I'm happy for his induction. As you can see on that note I may be a little bias. Ray was good copy while he was boxing. He was exciting and he had charisma. Does he belong in the Hall ? Well... If he was not from Ohio, I would say no..
He had a nice run at the top but not a great one. His best career win may have come before he won the WBA lightweight title. That was a clear cut decision over future WBC titleholder Jose Luis Ramirez. He gave the great Alexis Arguello a whale of a fight before losing in his first crack at the crown. He beat Arturo Frias to win the WBA title and had several nationally televised defenses. He stopped Hall Of Famer Bobby Chacon but Bobby was at the end of his fine career and Ray was just too young and too strong for him. Remember Ray lost his last four fights. He lost twice to Livingstone Bramble and he lost to Hector Camacho and Greg Haugen. Personally I thought Ray did enough to win the second Bramble fight and the Camacho bout. The bottom line is that I'm not sure that Ray was even the BEST lightweight in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. This issue was never settled between Ray and IBF champion Harry Arroyo. That would have been terrific fight. Too bad we missed it.
