Paez Jr, Highlights Feb 11 Sycuan Card

25.01.06 - Undefeated teenage sensation Jorge Paez Jr. highlights an internationally televised card presented by Zanfer in association with Sycuan Ringside Promotions Feb. 11 in Mexicali, Mexico. Paez Jr., the 18-year-old son of former International Boxing Federation featherweight champion Jorge Paez Sr., has a record of 6-0 with six knockouts..

The main event features Antonio Meza of Mexicali against Adolfo Landeros of Hidalgo, Mexico, in a 10-round featherweight bout.

Paez Jr. made his pro debut Feb. 4, 2005, with a first-round knockout of Sergio Lopez. He followed that with a first-round knockout of Arturo Ramirez March 18, a second-round knockout of Adrian Tellez April 29 and a second-round knockout of Rodrigo Rendon June 24. All four bouts were in Mexicali.

Paez Jr. weighed 125 pounds for his pro debut and was down to 121 pounds for his second bout March 18. However, in his fifth bout, on a Sycuan Ringside Promotions card in Laredo, Texas, Aug. 12, Paez Jr. was a 138-pound super lightweight and knocked out Javier Segura in the second round. In his most recent outing Dec. 23 on a Sycuan Ringside Promotions card at the Sycuan Resort & Casino Paez Jr. halted Lee De Leon in the second round.

“Not only is Jorge Jr. immensely talented, but he’s exciting and colorful as well,” said Glenn Quiroga, president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions of San Diego. “Considering his age and his exceptional skill level, we believe he has one of the brightest futures in the sport of boxing. There’s no limit to what he can achieve in the ring and the popularity he can generate.”

Paez Jr. was more than ready to turn pro. He began boxing at age six and had an amateur record of 80-1. His amateur career was and his pro career now is under the apt direction of veteran boxing figure Andy Ruiz.

Paez Sr. fought professionally from 1984 through 2003, had a record of 79-14-5 with 51 knockouts and was the IBF 126-pound champion from 1988 through 1990.

The 23-year-old Meza, a southpaw, has a record of 22-3 with 18 knockouts while the 26-year-old Landeros has a mark of 16-6-1 with nine knockouts.

Landeros won the International Boxing Association featherweight championship in his most recent outing, an eighth-round knockout of Jorge Martinez Oct. 15 at Imperial Beach, Calif.

The card starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are priced at $10, $20 and $30.

The card will be televised by Azteca America.

This is the first card Sycuan Ringside Promotions has presented in Mexico. Sycuan Ringside Promotions has promoted cards in California, Texas, Illinois and New York.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions is considered to be the fastest-growing and most dynamic promotional entity in the sport. Sycuan Ringside Promotions made its promotional debut during 2004, but already has or had four world champions and has promoted and presented world title bouts on premium cable networks.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions has many notable boxers in its stable in addition to Paez, including welterweight world champion Carlos Baldomir, World Boxing Council and IBF 122-pound champion Israel Vazquez, former IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz and former World Boxing Organization junior featherweight champion and the WBO’s No. 1 featherweight contender Joan Guzman.

Sycuan Ringside Promotions is led by Quiroga; Willie Tucker Sr., executive vice president; and Scott Woodworth, vice president of boxing operations.
