Statement From Team Camarena
12.02.06 - Regarding the loss to Paul Malignaggi: “First and foremost, I am fine and doing well. I have had, and continue to receive calls of well wishes. Thank you all. I would like to apologize to everyone for losing my title, it’s a hard pill to swallow, I wanted so badly to knock this guy out (Paul Malignaggi) that it influenced my style of fighting. I guess I let his bad mouthing get to me and I only thought of knocking him out, it was the wrong approach.” - Donald Camarena

“Many times in life you are forced to take a step back before you can proceed forward again, that’s what has happened in our quest to become a world champion. The mistake we made is thinking we were invincible. We prepared heavily for this fight against Paul Malignaggi, trained hard and got in the best of shape.
“Excuses are a dime a dozen and often found on special for free, important, is we find our mistakes, solve the problem and come up with correct solutions.
“We disappointed a lot of people but no one more than ourselves. We had an opportunity and did not take advantage of it, now it’s time to put this episode behind us and move forward. The door of opportunity was opened for us and we did not capitalize, now we re-group get better, stronger and next time we kick the door open ourselves.” – Aurelio Martinez
