De La Hoya Returns Against Mayorga!

28.02.06 - By Craig Parrish: 33-year-old Oscar De La Hoya will make his return to the ring following a year and a half layoff when he squares off against WBC Super Welterweight Champion Ricardo Mayorga on May 6th. The fight will beheld at the MGM Grand. De La Hoya’s last fight was a ninth round TKO loss to Bernard Hopkins on September 18th, 2004. Since then, De La Hoya has been focusing on his Golden Boys Promotions, leaving many to speculate if the 6-time World Champion would ever fight again. His record is 37-4 with 29 knockouts. He is ranked as the #1 challenger by the WBC for Mayorga’s title.

De La Hoya hopes to fight twice more before calling it a career, and that perhaps a victory over Mayorga will lead to a “superfight” between him and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. De La Hoya noted that if he is victorious, the fight with Mayweather Jr. would have to be held at 154.

Mayorga (28-5-1) is a dangerous fighter who is as well known for his exploits outside of the ring. He has smoked cigarettes during weigh-in and has had several run-ins with the law. He is also known as a relentless puncher and the possessor of an unorthodox style. This should be an interesting fight between two very colorful boxers and a good gage to see if De La Hoya still has the tools, at 33, to compete at the highest level.

Oscar had a difficult time handling the power of Bernard Hopkins in their title clash, so the move down in weight should help him regain some of his speed. With the Mosly-Vargas fight in the books, this is another date to mark down in what as starting to shape up as a terrific year of boxing.
