Hopate v Fowler on Friday night!
18.10.06 - Former National Rugby League and Australian Test star John Hopate has his third professional fight on a Jamie Myer card at the Bundamba Basketball Stadium in Ipswich on Friday night. Hopate,31, could hardly have been more impressive in his debut on the Mundine – Green under card in May when he stopped Frank Fassolo in 44 seconds. He then continued his good form in August on the Gold Coast when he became the first man to stop ex New Zealand amateur super heavyweight champion Alex Mene (in 4 rounds).

Hopate's opponent on Friday night will be former Gold Coast Charger NRL player and Ipswich local Anthony Fowler. The two have history and fireworks are expected for however long things last. Fowler is trained by former Australian and WBO Asia Pacific Featherweight champion Selwyn Currie. Currie was once rated as high as number 9 by the WBO behind then champion Prince Naseem Hamed. Hopate is trained by accomplished Sydney-siders Dave Millward and Dino Billinghurst.
Also featured on the five bout card will be current Australian 168 pound champion Jamie Pittman and a Queensland state super bantamweight title fight between former amateur's Leigh Lindgren and Matt Merideth. Former world title challenger Shannan Taylor and Gavin Topp, who faces Felix Sturm in Germany in November, will box a 4 round exhibition.
First fight is due to start at 7.30 pm with doors opening at 6.30 pm. (Important Note:The promotion is an over 18's event).
The official weigh - in will take place at Brothers Leagues Club in Ipswich at 7 pm Thursday night.
