26.10.06 - Photos: Mary Ann Owen / For SHOWTIME: Determined, hard-working Sergei "White Wolf'' Liakhovich continued his intense preparations for his upcoming, eagerly awaited heavyweight world title fight with a serious, spirited 90-minute workout Tuesday in Las Vegas.
Liakhovich, of Scottsdale, Ariz., will make the first defense of his WBO crown when he faces Brooklyn's Shannon "The Cannon'' Briggs in the Saturday, Nov. 4 main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING. Liakhovich won the WBO strap with an exciting decision over heavily favored Lamon Brewster last April 1 on SHOWTIME. The give-and-take 12-round slugfest is a serious candidate for 2006 Fight of the Year.
A winner of seven in a row, Liakhovich, of Scottsdale, Ariz., is 23-1 with 14 KO's. The hard-punching Briggs (47-4-1, with 41 KOs) has won 11 straight inside the distance..
In the opening half of a world championship doubleheader on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast), undefeated Juan "Baby Bull'' Diaz (30-0, 15 KOs) risks his WBA lightweight belt for a seventh time when he meets Fernando "La Fiera" Angulo (18-3, 12 KOs).
