Alex Arthur: "Im On Note For Title Defence"

30.10.06 - European Super-Featherweight Champion Alex Arthur reckons his face should feature on the new 20 note if he beats Sergio Palomo this Saturday (4 November). The flash Edinburgh star makes a record third defence of his title against the tough unbeaten Spaniard at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall and a win will set him up for a big world title fight next year and put him on the road to untold riches..

Philosopher and economist Adam Smith, who most famous work was The Wealth of Nations published in 1776, will be the first Scot to appear on an English bank note to be issued next year but Arthur believes his achievements in the ring should merit his face adorning the new note.

"No disrespect to Adam Smith, he created a great piece of work studying the rise of industry and commercial development in Europe and making the case for free markets but come on, I'm the first ever Scottish fighter to win the British and European super-featherweight titles!" Said Arthur.

"This forthcoming European title defence against Palomo on Saturday will be a great moment in my career because a victory will put me level with the great Jim Watt and ahead of the legendary Ken Buchanan who made two successful defences,"

"My promoter Frank Warren will get me a shot at a world title next year and when I win, I will be the first boxer from Edinburgh to win a world title since Buchanan over thirty years ago,"

He added, "I would love to see my face on a nice, fresh, crisp twenty pound note and to join the illustrious company of William Shakespeare, Issac Newton, George Stephenson and Florence Nightingale would make my mum really proud as she said I was never any good with money!"

"With fellow Scot Gordon Brown the current Chancellor of the Exchequer and heading to be the next Prime Minister, I will have to invite him to my fight this weekend to state my case."
