Tua Stops Wheeler In 7th Round!
03.11.06 - One-time heavyweight contender David Tua (46-3-1, 40 KO's) returned to the ring tonight, stopping southpaw Maurice Wheeler in the 7th round at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Despite his poor record (10-9-1, 1 KOs), Wheeler, a last minute replacement, had little trouble hitting Tua, for the most part landing anything he threw at the Samoan fighter. However, with very little power, Wheeler's punches had little effect on Tua, who kept constantly plodding slowly forward for most of the bout, forcing the action..
In the 7th round, Tua finally caught up to Wheeler and landed a big left hook to his midsection, sending him to the canvas in a heep of pain. The referee then stopped the bout at 2:48 of the 7th round. Afterwards, Tua mentioned wanting two to three more tune up fights before challenging for a heavyweight title.
