Euro Boxing Roundup: Arena Box Promotion Continues To Grow, More

02.01.07 - By Per Ake Persson: Arena Box Promotion in Hamburg, Germany, have kicked off the new year by signing up several new fighters. From Russia comes jr welter Sergey Sorokin, whoīs definitely a comer in the game. Lightheavy Kai Kurzawa, formerly with Sauerland Event, also has joined Arena as has Belorussian heavy Alexander Ustinov. Kurzawa, Ustinov and jr middle Alexander Sipos are all featured on Arenaīs dinner show at the Elysee Hotel in Hamburg February 10.. The next show for the new year is scheduled for March 24 at the Sporthalle, also in Hamburg, when Italian Domenico Spada defends the WBC Intīl and EU 160 lb titles against Mahir Oral.

EBU heavy champ Vladimir Virchis takes on American Marcus McGee January 13 in a non-title fight on Universumīs show in Halle/Saale.

Sweden-based Ugandan lightweight Sam Rukundo will next fight February 7 at the Mayfair Sporting Club in London. Rukondoīs British Masters title will not be at stake.

Franklin "Destroyer" Theran defends the WBO I/C superbantam title January 26 in Palma de Mallorca. Also on the bill is lightweight Hoang Sang Nguyen.

Heavyweight Aldo Colliander lashes out hard on the promoters of "the Return" show in Gothenburg January 27 in an article in evening paper Aftonbladet today (Jan 2). "They only have hasbeenīs on the show. Mikael Lindblad, Johan Thorbjornsson and Giovanni Alvarez are all coming off layoffs after losing their last fights!"

Promoter Robert Nordman take, not surprisingly, on a different approach and says he feels itīs not until now the Swedish fighters have had a chance to fight at home.

Aldo told me heīs willing to fight Lindblad and Thorbjornsson anytime.

Aftonbladet also writes itīs not likely that ex-WBO middle champ Armand Krajnc will fight be on the show.
