08.01.07 - By Craig Parrish: According to the Arizona Republic, former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison underwent a blood test on Friday in hopes of receiving a boxing license. Morrison has not fought in the United States in ten years after testing positive for the HIV virus. He is 38 years old.
Morrison is claiming that the initial test was a false positive, and Peter McKinn, a Phoenix based promoter stated that Morrison has tested negative for the virus at least 3 times, the last test being administered in December. John Montano of the Arizona boxing commission witnessed the test last Friday.
The results of the test are expected sometime this week. If the test is negative, Montano has stated that he would also like to see Morrison spar. If the sparring is satisfactory, the process for obtaining a license would move forward. No meeting for consideration of a license has been set at this point.
McKinn hopes to get Morrison in a 4-round bout in Phoenix on January 19th. He claims there are two heavyweights that are willing to fight him, but a contract cannot be offered until it is known if Morrison will be eligible to fight.
