09.01.07 - By Per Ake Persson: EBU middle champ "Idi" Amin Asikainen, 19-0, defends the title January 30 at the Hartwall Arena in Helsinki against Italian Lorenzo Di Giacomo, 34-2-1. In the chief support jr Michele Di Rocco, 14-0-1, defends the EU title against Juho Tolppola, 19-2. This show was originally scheduled for February 10 but as it clashed with the EBU 28 rule P 3 Boxing and Welldone Promotions were forced to change the date to have Asikainen´s already scheduled mandatory defence against German Sebastian Sylvester to take place. Asikainen vs Sylvester II is set for March 3 in Rostock..

In a supporting bout Latvian jr middle Jurijs Boreiko, Asikainen´s chief sparring, will fight Frenchman Brice Faradji.

Frenchman Christophe Tendil, last seen getting knocked out by Amin Asikainen for the EU 160 lb title, and Russian, based in Spain, Sergey Kharchenko clash for the vacant IBC supermiddle title January 25 in Montfavet, France. Kharchenko looked very unlucky losing to highly ranked German Danilo Haussler this past fall.

Hungarian jr middle Attila Kovacs will headline Pro Box Promotion´s debut January 20 in Papa but the IBO title will apparently not be on the line. In the chief support lightheavy Tamas Popovics face Macedonian Sasha Mitrevski. At supermiddle Joszef Nagy is in against German Bernard Donfack.

An undercard fight to Halmich vs Kempf January 13 in Halle/Saale looks pretty interesting: heavyweight Gbenga Oloukun, who up until now have been pretty well protected, take on Russian dangerman Alexei Varakin.

German lightheavy Kai Kurzawa will be be featured on Elite Box Promotion´s show in Riga, Latvia, March 10 as well. Kurzawa is the co-challenger for the vacant EU title along with Frenchman Mohammed Bennema.

"The Swedish Beauty", 40-year old Aasa Sandell takes on Trinidadian Scroller Carrington January 27 in Gothenburg. Carrington was stopped by Natascha Ragosina in three in November in Duesseldorf and is simply so bad you have to see it to believe it.

Various media reports that WBA jr welter champ Souleyman M´Baye will defend the title against Brit Graham Earl February 17 in London. Officially M´Baye is still to defend against mandatory challenger Andreas Kotelnik in a fight that could take place late February / early March.

German referee and judge Joachim Jacobsen has passed away at the age of 56 during a vacation in Indonesia. Jacobsen was the third man in the ring in many big fights in and out of Germany.
