Frank Warren Secures M’baye-Kotelnik Clash

16.01.07 - Promoter Frank Warren won the bidding war to stage Souleymane M’Baye’s WBA World Light-Welterweight title defence against Ukranian Andreas Kotelnik when purse bids were opened at the WBA headquarters in Panama City today. Warren’s bid of $648,000USD saw off the Acaries brothers, who bid $602,000USD, and Kotelnik’s own promoter Universum who bid $340,000USD. The fight will take place in Britain - where M’Baye won the title with a fourth round stoppage of Raul Balbi last September in Bolton - with a date and venue to be announced shortly..

M’Baye, who is the dangerman of the 140lb division, has been wisely avoided by Ricky Hatton who chose to vacate his title rather than face the classy hard-hitting Frenchman.

Known as ‘The Sensation’, M’Baye, from Paris, has already defeated Kotelnik just over two years ago in a WBA World title eliminator.

Warren said, “I’m delighted that I have won the purse bids and secured the right to stage the fight. It will take place in Britain where Souley is building up quite a fan base following his sensational win over Balbi last year. There are quite a few French hitman in Britain at the moment; while Arsenal’s Thierry Henry, Bolton’s Nicholas Anelka and Chelsea’s Didier Drogba are banging them in, Souley is going to be banging them out.”
