Winky speaks up on Frazier, Vasquez, Vargas, De La Hoya & McKart

By Ike Enwereuzor

12.10.01 - Tonight's ESPN friday night fight at Fastacy Springs Casino, in Indio, California will feature former WBO jr middleweight champ, Ronald "Winky" Wright and Robert Frazier battling for the vacant IBF 154 pound championship.

Former WBO junior middleweight champion "Winky" Wright carried an amateur record of (56-4) and won the PAL National title in 1989.

Wright's known for his two wins over Bronco McKart had his first 16 fights in Florida before he went to Europe and made several outing there in France. This is what he had to say about his past, present and future

How long have you been preparing for your fight with Robert Frazier?
I have been training very hard for couple of months now. They kept changing the dates now it's on and we're ready to go.

Your impression of Frazier?
He's a good fighter and mover. He throws a lot of punches so I'll slowly break him down.

What's next for you if you pass Frazier?
They are talking about Mosley, Vargas wants a rematch and I would like to add Oscar De La Hoya to the list. I want to fight the best.

Your thoughts on De La Hoya and Vargas if you have to meet them in the ring?
Oscar's a very smart fighter but I'm not sure if he wants to face me yet. I know I'm good too with solid tools to beat Oscar. Vargas, I think I beat him before, no doubts but I will beat him again. He says he want to fight me again I hope he's not just talking.

What did you think of the Hopkins-Trinidad fight?
Hopkins did a great job. He did what he was suppose to do keeping his hands up and picking his shots. He was just shouting whenever he found opening.

How would you compare your two fights with Bronco McKart?
A lot of fighters don't want to fight McKart, they keep ducking him. I may fight him again. He's fighting fo rthe No.1 shot this month too. The two fights with him were good fight and I'll be ready for him if I have to meet him again.

Please, describe your fight with Keith Mulling? Harry Simon?
and the fight with Vasquez in France?
Mulling was good and tough. He was a very strong guy, good opponent and tough to fight. It was a good fight for me though. Simon just throw a lot of punches but I blocked of his shots. I think I won that fight anyway. Vasquez was just an ok fighter. I would have killed that guy. My shoes just wasn't right so he got credit for knowing me down and won by points.

What really made you decide to box?
I just liked it then I went to the gym and rest was history. I was winning my fight so I decided to turn pro.

What do you remember most from you first amateur fight?
I remember getting tied like heal.

Your favorite fighters?
Roy Jones jr, Floyd Mayweather, I like the way Naseem Hamed fight and I love Mike Tyson of course.

What do you like doing when you're not boxing?
I love playing golf, Basketball and I'm now getting into music. I have my own Record label now called Pound for Pound Records. You should keep your ears & eyes open for this one. I've signed some Rap group and others too.

Any comments to fans about tonights fight?
Great fight to watch. Expect a great Winky coming out to take Frazier apart. It's going to be an exciting fight and I'm going to destroy Frazier and then Vargas can come back for the rematch I'll beat him again. I know I won our first fight too.
